My second year with the feds
After I had taken the competition I got placed in Industry,Trade and Commerce where I worked for Geoff Elliott(Mr.Elliott).Mr. Elliott asked me how I had done on the personality portion of the tests ;"I said okay" .Good he answered then you must have good judgement.I answered I guess so.Then he said do your project all by yourself and show me your good judgement.I took my work into him several times to ask for feedback and he said "use your own good judgement". That's it; I said.Yup use your own good judgement.I needed the money for school but I left 6 weeks early to show the P.S.C that I disliked Mr .Elliott . Pierre had no trouble with him but I sure did.
The next summer I reported to the Dept.of Agriculture and reported to Bob Blackburn. That's funny I thought because there was a Bob Blackburn who acted as The Lone Ranger on t.v. No relation I was sure. But Mr. Blackburn liked my work and told me so.I was also directed by the deputy to have lunch often with Mike Griffin and Jim Lahore. They were the American and Canadian delegate to the United Nations.Mike was always dressed in suits and he was the American delegate.I found him a little stuffy and we didn't lunch much.Jim was British educated and born in England. He wore tweed jackets and liked sports.Jim and I got along great and he showed me the Dow's Lake Boat House where a lot of Brits hung out;it was a prestigious place in Ottawa.Jim became a good friend and showed me some British sociability.
At the end of the summer I handed in my final report and Mr. Blackburn told me that he was authorized to say (from the deputy) that I could work during the winter at my own hours and the same rate of pay.I would pick up my project assignments from Mr. Carmichael and hand them into him. What a plumb!I made about $5000 over the winter and paid for my residence.Thank you Mr. Blackburn.
