coffee with Bob

When I worked in the Department of Communications I worked in the Economics Branch.Iwas told (by my director-general)that this was the top branch in the department and Social Policy was lower ranked. It was here that I first met Bob Rabinovitz. He was either director or assistant director. of Social Policy .He had a PH.D. from McGill University in Montreal.I talked to him several times in meetings and he was very long -winded.He tended to say in 50 words what others said in 5 to 10.I myself was trained to speak simply.Still I found he had good ideas if a little risky to carry out.I was envious of his freedom of movement because he had meetings in many branches as he was "in demand".I mentioned this to my director -general and she told me that I was considered his peer in the department.I don't think so I told her and she said both Bob and me were on C.A.P(career assignment program). This I was told was the fast track to senior management.Bob had done a few good projects and so had I.Later Bob moved out and became an assistant deputy minister in the Secretary of State.I moved to C.R.T.C but I had a  "nothing"job. My director-general's words did not ring true at this time.
I didn't see Bob for awhile until I bought another house in New Edinburgh and one day I was looking at fixing an outside wall and Bob came out (from next door)and asked me if I wanted a coffee. He asked me if I owned this building and I said yes.He said he owned the one beside it and was glad someone was going to fix mine up.We talked often about the improvements that I should make ;he had grandiose plans for my improvemnents.I didn't listen too much because I had a budget until he told me that he had an appraisal done on his building and it came in at $400,000.Now I was listening.I did in fact put quite a few improvements in and I got my own appraisal of my building and it came in at $385,000.Bob's ideas were right but I didn't do everything he told me.I had my own way of doing things but I was glad I had coffee with Bob.
Bob got a job as a vice president of Seagrams in Montreal and then he became the President of C.B.C
