LIFE IN THE 'HOOD
I said in a previous blog that I lived in Ottawa for about fifteen years.I also incorrectly stated that I had owned about fifteen to twenty houses. It was probably twelve houses. But most (not all) were in New Edinburgh.New Edinburgh is side by side with the area called Rockcliffe. The Prime Minister's residence is considered to be in Rockcliffe but is physically located in the confines of New Edinburgh.Actually New Edinburgh and Rockcliffe are interwoven.Parts of Rockcliffe are filled with very ordinary houses. For example ,my old friend Brian Manwaring, lived in a
very ordinary part of Rockcliffe as did one of our most prolific songwriters Les Emmerson (as in It never rains on Maple Lane).
New Edinburgh is squeezed between City Hall and Rockcliffe but parts of it are nicer than Rockcliffe.
The down town part of New Edinburgh is filled with old style hardware stores and artistic stores done in a New England style. One corner of the down town is anchored by the Towne Cinema. It does not show the usual shows, for example, The Rocky Horror Picture Show ran for two weeks and everybody knew all the words to the songs.Pierre Trudeau had been seen going in several times. He walked straight down Creighton Street. The other anchor is the Beechwood I.G.A.Eveybody shopped here but it is not cheap.I have seen Margaret Trudeau in there three or four times.Rockcliffe has no down town ;it does however have all the embassies which are next to the Ottawa River. That is how Rockcliffe and New Edinburgh are interwoven.
